Welcome to an exciting utility for your Newton! PowerNames(tm) speeds up the time in which it takes to move from card to card within the Name File. PowerNames has been optimized for speed! It is no longer necessary to scroll through or search your Name File to find a name. You can now even jump directly to a name from the Date Book or the NotePad. It also allows you to customize the way in which the Name File displays its information. And because PowerNames integrates its features seamlessly into the Name File, it is simple to use.
INSTALLATION
PowerNames is approximately 55K in size but only requires around 4K of heap space when active. PowerNames can be installed on your internal store or on a card. Since PowerNames is always running once activated, it needs to be resident. Installing it onto an external card does not pose any problems except that if the card is removed while PowerNames is active, PowerNames will request that the card be reinserted so that it may automatically deactivate itself. Once deactivated, the card can then be removed.
You will notice that once installed, PowerNames will automatically activate itself. With PowerNames, it is not necessary to activate it manually. Initially, you will most likely notice the small "Power" button in the status bar of the NotePad. This icon of a lightning bolt will become very useful once you visit the Name File.
Now open up the Name File. At first, there is no apparent difference but soon you will discover the new "Power" behind the Show button. When tapped, the Show button will now allow you to select names which you have viewed recently and quickly display their card. To get things started and to begin adding names to the list, simply use the Name File a bit and display a few different names. It is important to know that quickly scrolling through the Name File will not automatically add the name to the pop-up list. PowerNames is smart and assumes you do not wish to add those names you quickly scroll past and only adds those you view for a moment. After you have done that, you will begin to notice the Show button's pop-up list to include the names you have recently viewed. Selecting a name from the pop-up will quickly navigate you to that name in the Name File. If you do not see the name in the pop-up list you wish to display, tap "Overview" to display the Name File's overview screen. If you wish to add a name to the list permanently, simply tap "Make Permanent" and it will never be removed from the list. It is that easy. Now you have a utility which really allows you to "Show" what you are looking for.
POWERNAMES' LIST
PowerNames keeps a "First-In-First-Out" (FIFO, pronounced fie-foe) list of names. Once a name has been viewed, it is added to the temporary list. If the temporary list of names grows too large ( for the demo this is three names), the first name added to the list is removed to make room for the new name. If a name that is already in the list is re-visited, it is moved from its current position to the end of the list. This way, the list not only incorporates the concept of recently viewed names but frequently viewed names as well.
Of course, you really do not need to worry about any of this. As a PowerNames user, the list is displayed in alphabetically order so that you may easily locate the name you are looking for. PowerNames also gives you the option to combine temporary and permanent names or keep them separated by a dividing line. If you choose to separate the temporary and permanent names, the permanent names are kept at the bottom. This way, they are closest to your stylus.
PowerNames DEMO
The DEMO version of PowerNames is for the most part fully functional. Everything in the real version is available in the DEMO version except for one important difference. The number of names that can be stored in the pop-up list is limited to three. The real version allows a total of 18 names.
When PowerNames automatically activates itself when first installed, its main screen flashes quickly. In the full working version, this does not occur. This function has been added to the demo to protect against hackers altering the demo.
PowerNames has been optimized for speed. It may seem subtle, but pop-up lists appear quickly and do not require you to wait for them to be displayed. Even with the full working version which allows 18 names, the pop-up list displays instantaneously because PowerNames is working even when you are not.
OTHER FEATURES
In addition to adding a pop-up menu to the NotePad, Date Book and Name File, PowerNames allows you to customize the way in which the names are displayed when viewed within the Name File. Seasoned Newton users are probably aware that when a name is displayed in the Name File in the Card format, switching to the overview screen only shows half a screen of names. With PowerNames, you can now specify that the overview screen is always displayed in full screen mode. Similarly, users can now select the card format of choice (Card, Card & Notes or All Info) in which cards are displayed when a name is selected from the overview mode. Many other features are available using PowerNames which are all accessible through its preferences screen. Its preferences screen can be found by tapping the "i" button from within PowerNames' main screen. PowerNames' main screen of course is displayed when PowerNames is tapped from the Extras Drawer.
INCOMPATIBILITIES
PowerNames 1.02 DEMO is designed not to operate when ViewFrame (a developer's tool) is installed. The full working version of PowerNames does not have this limitation.
